What a difference a song makes: Thiaraguene

We are excited to report that we are very close to being able to send the first wave of earnings from recording sales back to our partner communities in Senegal. We would like to sell a few more recordings to maximize the funds being sent out. So, this week, we are sharing some insights into how much impact the earnings will have on the members of these small, rural communities. Today we will focus on Thiaraguene Wolof and Thiaraguene Cognadji.

These two neighboring communities share a common heritage, but they are also proud of their own identities. Thiaraguene (as the greater area is known) became the first partner communities in the initial stages of our pilot project. The communities were eager to share their music and present songs of personal importance to the musicians. As is common across Senegal, the songs are sung primarily by women and accompaniment is provided by percussion on bowls and jugs. The result is a true taste of day-to-day life in rural Senegal.

The communities are both passionately motivated to improve their quality of life and have lots of plans for local development efforts. Thiaraguene Cognadji is hoping to use its first wave of earnings to buy materials and seeds to expand the women’s gardens, providing their families with better nutrition and extra income. Meanwhile, Thiaraguene Wolof is working on starting a women’s microenterprise program, and these initial earnings will provide them with the funds to develop low-cost, high-value products to sell locally. These projects transform women’s music into empowering projects directly impacting the communities’ women.
